The Little Blue Fish

Once upon a time a little baby blue fish swam into my life. A gift from my husband to ease my loneliness and desire for a little friend to care for. We named him "Deedo" and lovingly spoiled him as much as one can spoil a fish.

As this little blue fish grew older and bigger he started showing off his beautiful colors, the peacock greens and deep reds. His personality of darting around the bowl when he knew it was mealtime was amusing to watch.

Deedo soon turned 2 and seemed to still be going strong, a few months passed by when quietly in the night my little fish passed away.
I will miss my little guy so much. I will never forget how much I loved him and how he swam into my heart- even though he was just a little fish.

Goodbye Deedo. Thankyou for making me happy

Meet Nova!

So I just realized that I never told you all about our new betta!! We got him right before Christmas time and with all the holiday excitement I just completely forgot! With that being said- say hello to Nova! Nova is a male halfmoon betta splendens. The photos do not do his brilliant colors justice at all. He has purple, violet, blue, pink, red and a splash of orange. The above photo is with flash, the below photos are without flash.

In this photo Nova is flaring his fins - look at those colors! He is like a firework!

Nova has been very active and has a very sweet personality. He is not full size yet believe it or not!

Isn't he just gorgeous!?

In other betta news, our beautiful Ty-lee swam off to fishy heaven last week. I am so thankful he lived as long as he did considering his spine was bent when we got him. He was a beautiful little fish and I will miss him.

Deedo however is still going strong! 2 years old and still very active. I hope he will make it to his 3rd year very much so! I will have a hard time when he passes away because he is our first pet and he is very special because of that!

What was your first pet?
If you are married did you two get a pet together as newlyweds? Comment below!

Betta Appreciation Post

One of my current projects I have been working on is trying to improve the photos of the bettas. I would like to take more "artistic photos" of my bettas- but I am still....missing something. Anyways, these were from my latest attempt. I included some detail shots so you can see their beautiful scales up close

So, this is where Ty-Lee spends most of his time. To coax him out into the open more I usually drop a few food pellets in.

Here Ty-Lee is swimming upwards for the food.

Look at the shine and reflections on his scales! I just love it!!

Okay, notice how the ends of his tail fins kind of fan out a bit? Well, we had an issue with a previous plastic plant that was tearing all the edges of his fins! Once we discovered this we switched out the plastic plant for a much softer fabric one. And the "fan" look to his tail is actually fin regrowth!

I adore up close photos. The bettas are so small, it's awesome to see what they look like in more detail.

This is my fat little boy Deedo.

I love his array of colors

So, within the next few weeks I am going to try to photograph them again and see if I can get my little guys to flare their fins. It is incredibly pretty when they flare!

God bless,
~Rebecca

Betta Update!

Here is my beautiful male veil tale Betta fish "Deedo" he is over 1 year old now. The camera flash really brings out the iridescence of his scales and fins.

I just cannot get over the beauty of these fish!

Without flash- the blue shades are so pretty

Bettas generally have a life span of about 2-3 years. Deedo is very healthy and that makes me happy!!

Ty-lee is our halfmoon dual tail Betta fish. He had fin rot several months back- however he is completely healthy now and his fins have grown back!!

I love how just his fins are in focus!

We changed the vases the bettas were in, both of them are now in this type of vase. They have more room now and are doing very well! The plant in the vase is a peace lily. Deedo loves to hide in the roots.

So that's my betta update. I have been fighting off the urge to buy more Bettas! They are just so beautiful!

God bless,
~Rebecca

A big thank you to everyone for your support and encouragement regarding my last health update!
So I found this online and I had to share this picture because for me it rings true and I laughed!

so true.
I could add....and not feeling sick, suffering from headaches, sleeping like the dead....

Anyways, small pet-related and other random news now!

Zoey is almost a year old now, she just went through her first molt and Momma has had to give her at least 5 baths because she has been so sad looking!

Look at all those clean feathers!!!!

In other budgie news, our new parakeets have been officially named!
Charlie is the white one, and Daisy is the yellow one. We have had Daisy escape her cage several times and fly into EVERYTHING so for their safety and to prevent broken wings or worse, a broken neck- we clipped their wings. Charlie was an angel during the whole thing but Daisy was NOT happy!

I also received an early birthday gift from Justin! I have been wanting to collect these knight figures for YEARS and he surprised me with a Knight set!! I am so excited and can't wait to watch the collection grow!

You probably noticed the two fish bowls behind the knights. Well we have had only two Bettas since the fiasco in November when I lost four in two months. We almost lost Ty-Lee (the pink one) a few weeks back. His scales went from rose pink to a pale gray. I thought for sure we were going to lose him.
However after two weeks of medication he is back to rose pink and as frisky as ever! Phew!
I am thankful that he has recovered!

Betta Update

I am sad to say that we did lose Noel.
Inigo is still alive.

Justin was able to speak to a pet store worker about our situation
Apparently we did two things wrong, one was reusing a live plant from a fish bowl in which the fish had died.
(I had called a betta company and they said the plant was safe to use for a different fish...turns out it is not)

Another thing we did not know was that if a fish dies everything must be sterilized by boiling water, before reusing for another fish (gravel, fake plants, bowl)
So even though I had scrubbed everything in hot water it was not enough to kill off the bacteria.
They did think that Noel was possibly sick before we had bought him.

So now we are trying to save Inigo.

God bless,
~Rebecca

Well This Stinks....

Well.... I feel just awful.

Noel is sick and I JUST got him 4 days ago.
And another betta is sick.

And I have been sick too!

But back to the bettas, I simply cannot fathom why the new one is ill unless he was sick when we bought him. The other one being ill has me very confused. I have been giving them both meds and no change. So I must assume the meds are simply not working.

I did some research and am going to try the rock salt method

The weird part is Deedo, my oldest is, is still doing amazingly well and is very healthy. He has never been sick at all. (although I am getting nervous...)

I am doubting Noel will make it through today, but Inigo still looks ok.

We shall see what happens. I guess the worst part is I am way too fond of them....
Sorry for being so depressing but when it rains it pours I guess.

As much as I love bettas they are all so different in maintaining. Some are VERY easy to keep, and others can be a nightmare.  My sister had 1 for a year and a half and Lucy never developed ich, she did die of swim bladder. My brother had a fish for 1 whole week.
In my experience its been 50/50 with life range of these fish. In total I have dealt with 11 Bettas. We have had an average of either 1-2 years (which is normal) and then the 1 week to 6 months.

Would I still recommend Bettas? Oh yes. Even though I have had trouble with them...Sometimes you find just the right one and it's just wonderful. :)

God bless,
~Rebecca

Meet Noel

This is Noel. My husband surprised me with a new little Betta since I lost two last week.
Noel is a dual tail and so far seems to be quite the little sweetheart and more calm than my others.

It's hard to tell from the photo, but Noel is blue with iridescent green and pink which is especially gorgeous on his white fins. His head is mottled slate grey/blue and white.

A big thanks to my husband for this wonderful gift!

God bless,
~Rebecca

Now the Sad News...

Fin, my two year old King Betta died yesterday....

And my little Zuko died today.

I will miss them both.
Fin was quite the character and Zuko was a big grump...
But they were my little "babies" and I enjoyed spoiling them.

I do still have three others....
