 My little piece of the sky is gone.

When my husband and I were forced to move this past March it quickly became apparent we were going to be unable to find an apartment that would let us bring all three of our pets.  

 I was beyond devastated about losing a pet because I take pet ownership very seriously. We simply could not find any apartments that would allow our cat, rabbit and bird, let alone ANY pets.

I had to make the heartbreaking decision to rehome our bird. I was relieved though to find out that a relative of my husband was willing to take Zoey for us. I could still visit my little girl. I was still upset she couldn't be with us but thankful Zoey was close by. 

 I received the news no one wants to hear about their pets. My little girl had gone missing. 

My husband's relative believes she may have gotten outside when a door was opened.

It's been two weeks and I'm still a bit emotional about losing Zoey. I cling to the hope that maybe someone in the neighborhood found her and took her in.

I know some people might think "Meh, it's just a bird, it's sad but not a big deal." 

For me it is a big deal. I've lost a pet, she wasn't "just a bird" to me. She was my little girl, my little "fluffy-butt", she was obnoxious and silly and cute. 

Goodbye Zoey, I will miss you

Our birds are doing really well. Now that it is spring time we can put them closer to the windows and even take their cages outside from some fresh air!  

Charlie is still VERY vocal. We have figured out that he actually knows some phrases and says "Thankyou" and "I love you". He just says them REALLY LOUDLY. I have tried different methods to get him to tone it down just a bit but eh...he is a bird. What are you going to do? 

Daisy is really quiet, Zoey is still her normal self chirping and occasionally getting in screeching matches with Charlie. Apart from the screeching times I really do enjoy their chirping and twittering noises. 

I find that my little feathered ones help a lot just cheering me up when I am sick :)

Yay for Warmer Weather!

The weather has been incredibly beautiful so I brought my little ones outside for the first time! They loved getting some fresh air! And don't worry I stayed with them the entire time!!

A big thank you to everyone for your support and encouragement regarding my last health update! 

So I found this online and I had to share this picture because for me it rings true and I laughed! 

I could add....and not feeling sick, suffering from headaches, sleeping like the dead....

Anyways, small pet-related and other random news now! 

Zoey is almost a year old now, she just went through her first molt and Momma has had to give her at least 5 baths because she has been so sad looking! 

Look at all those clean feathers!!!! 

In other budgie news, our new parakeets have been officially named! 

Charlie is the white one, and Daisy is the yellow one. We have had Daisy escape her cage several times and fly into EVERYTHING so for their safety and to prevent broken wings or worse, a broken neck- we clipped their wings. Charlie was an angel during the whole thing but Daisy was NOT happy! 

I also received an early birthday gift from Justin! I have been wanting to collect these knight figures for YEARS and he surprised me with a Knight set!! I am so excited and can't wait to watch the collection grow! 

You probably noticed the two fish bowls behind the knights. Well we have had only two Bettas since the fiasco in November when I lost four in two months. We almost lost Ty-Lee (the pink one) a few weeks back. His scales went from rose pink to a pale gray. I thought for sure we were going to lose him. 

However after two weeks of medication he is back to rose pink and as frisky as ever! Phew! 

I am thankful that he has recovered!

Question On Parakeets

 Adorable! Do birds "warm up" to humans over time or will she always be a bit stand-offish? I know some people who have birds that are very affectionate and some (like the one my sister had) are very mean! -S 

Someone asked me this question and it is a very good question!

 

I think each bird is totally different when it comes to being affectionate. From what I have read and heard- Cockatoos are VERY cuddly and affectionate, while Caiques are known to be a bit more stand-offish. But even within their own breeds birds are different.

 I have had three in my life-all parakeets. My first one was a male and he was very bitey at the beginning but mellowed out as he aged. Very affectionate toward the later years of his life.

 My second bird was a female, not very bitey and very affectionate. Zoey, my third, is still bitey and is still warming up to us. I think how they were raised, plus the human interaction are factors too in their disposition.

Some breeders will pull the chicks (within the first 5 weeks of hatching) from the mom bird and then hand feed and raise them. This can produce calmer more affectionate birds, but it has had problems too. 

Parakeets at pet stores are usually not hand raised and so essentially I bought a "wild" bird.  

And since Parakeets are flock birds the goal is for her to see Justin and I as part of her "flock". This can take some time. 

 All in all, she is pretty good. She even let me take a "family picture" lol

Snow and Zoey Updates!

 

So the good news is...the snow is melting! 

 

The bad news is that Zoey is annoyed with me... (she is always annoyed at me-but now she is giving me looks!)

 

 guessing that she was born in April or May- her cere is white so I am going to say that we know for sure now that Zoey is indeed a female! 

Constantly preening and eating and screeching! 

It has taken her about 3 months to figure out how to play with her toys. The hoops thing on the right is her FAVORITE and she is constantly playing with it. She still is very wary of Justin and I but will tolerate tummy rubs.

Zoey's opinions on life.... lol

On a side note, the upstairs neighbors are blasting Christmas songs.... I think the early snow got to them.

Zoey News

 

"Little Girl" has joined me today! 

Zoey still will not perch but has allowed for a quick scoop up with two hands and placed on the shoulder. She seems to like it and enjoys chirping right by my ear..... lol

 

 

Zoey also likes Xbox.... 

As well as hogging the laptop. 

 So that is the update on Little Girl. She has been very vocal, loves to scream and has discovered her mirror and how to play with her toys.

Update on Zoey and our Fish!

This is a video of all our fish, including all of our Bettas. 

I absolutely adore our fish! :) 

Zoey is doing fairly well. 

She has been chirping, singing and screeching. Thankfully she prefers chirping!

She has been eating quite a bit, but has not played with any of the toys yet. 

As of today she is starting to learn how to perch on my finger. Still flighty and timid though! She is not a biter which I am incredibly thankful for!! The few times she got out of the cage I have had to forcibly pick her up and put her back- she has bitten and boy did she bite hard!! Yikes! So yes, I am VERY thankful she does not bite usually. I had a bird years ago that was a biter, not as hard as Zoey, but enough to be annoying. 

So on the whole Zoey is pretty much a sweetheart. Looking forward to being able to bond with her!
